A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of one’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. During this type of evaluation, a neuropsychologist will administer objective tests via pencil/paper or on the computer to asses brain functioning. The evaluation typically includes assessment of several domains of cognitive functioning including, intellectual abilities, attention, memory, language, executive functioning (i.e., planning, organization, problem solving); visuospatial abilities, processing speed and emotional functioning. A neuropsychologist can administer testing to understand an individual’s strength and weaknesses in specific areas and then determine if behavioral or cognitive changes are associated with central nervous system disease or injury. Testing is sensitive to mild changes and can also assist in differentiating between normal aging and a medical or neurologic etiology. Once these problems are identified, a neuropsychologist makes recommendation to help with treatment planning.
